CliniComp’s Cutting-Edge Electronic Health Record (EHR) Solution Suite: Interview With VP Of Sales

The CliniComp solution suite is an integrated web-based EHR with an architectural framework conquering ever-evolving interoperability, scalability, adaptability, and real-time performance data challenges to provide a longitudinal patient record. Pulse 2.0 interviewed CliniComp VP of Sales Kem Graham to learn more about the company.

Kem Graham’s Background

What is Kem Graham’s background? Graham said:

I graduated from UCLA with a background in animal science. However, when I entered the workforce, I realized I was drawn to the healthcare business world in part because my father is an orthopedic surgeon, and I grew up in the medical arena. My father started an electronic medical records (EHR) company when I was six years old, so I have been speaking this language for years. In fact, when I was a little girl, I accompanied him to a trade show in Las Vegas, and I was handing out flyers explaining the need to eliminate paper records. Now, I have come full circle working for a cutting-edge EHR company.”

“I began my career selling into the healthcare space with a small company specializing in database integration software. I started on the admin side and was so intrigued by what we did that I began researching our white papers to educate myself about how software integration translates data from disparate sources. I have been in the healthcare space for most of my career, which has given me a broad understanding of the need for, and challenges with, system-wide interoperability, system-wide adaptability, and scalability in the EHR space.”

Company History/Responsibilities

Can you share some history about the company? And what are your primary responsibilities? Graham shared:

“CliniComp has an over 40-year history in the industry, and our experience illustrates the stability and leadership of the organization. It’s a testament to the underlying, service-oriented architecture of the product, which is flexible and adaptable, allowing for consistent reliability and performance for decades. During our time in business, we’ve made incredible and fundamental advancements in computer science that have kept us innovating to support some of the most high-acuity and high-security environments in healthcare. With decades where our primary focus has been in the government sector, we have a strong foundation for serving what we see as a huge gap in the market for commercial organizations.”

“As the vice president of sales, it is my honor and duty to help identify the gaps we are distinctively qualified to address and guide us in how best to achieve success. Based upon our research and extensive experience in the market, we have a unique opportunity to help organizations that need a comprehensive and integrated EHR solution suite but might not otherwise be able to conquer or afford the daunting task of true interoperability.”

Favorite Memory

What has been Graham’s favorite memory working for the company so far? Graham reflected:

“My favorite memory is going through the interview process with Chris Haudenschild, founder and CEO, to understand his vision. I was fascinated. With 40 years of outstanding achievements – as evidenced by longstanding customer relationships and an unblemished record of uptime and security – he continues to inspire innovation that is disrupting the EHR market. While I’ve had many wonderful positions throughout my career, I can’t always say I was fascinated. That’s why I was honored to come on board to help the company expand in the market.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Graham explained:

“Over our four-decade history, our technology has made continuous advancements based on the needs of the market to bring us to where we are today, while maintaining its founding principles of reliability, scalability, performance and clinical workflow. Our comprehensive EHR includes inpatient, ambulatory, ancillaries and revenue cycle management.”

“Our System-as-a-Service (SYaaS) concept makes us a one-stop-shop for the complete electronic health record solution suite. As an alternative to other offerings, our model includes all hardware, software, and ongoing support services. This approach centralizes all implementation, optimization, and system monitoring services to manage reliability and performance. Health systems who purchase this SYaaS model have a predictable cost that includes all current and future device interfaces, and continuous IT and training support that significantly lowers the total cost of ownership. This supports healthcare organizations with their focus on optimizing care processes and workflows to achieve improved clinical and financial outcomes.”

“Fundamental to our solution is interoperability and data integration, which directly address the frustrations clinicians experience trying to locate and chart patient information across multiple systems. With our solution, data integration creates a bridge across systems to present clinicians with a complete longitudinal patient record for more precise and timely diagnosis and treatment, while supporting workflow optimization and automation. Time savings is significant when EHR data and device data are integrated and available to clinicians from any location across the organization. For example, vital signs, hemodynamic monitors, and cardiac wave forms, including complex automatic measurements, can be assessed in one view to enable timely, informed treatment decisions. When data is well integrated and presented in useful, interactive ways, clinicians can make informed care decisions, save time and experience higher job satisfaction.”

“Facilitating true interoperability that serves the full care continuum and scales to meet the needs of any size organization is a key strength of our underlying, service-oriented, proprietary architecture that meets an organizations’ needs today and tomorrow.”

Challenges Faced

What challenges have Graham and the team faced in building the company? Graham acknowledged:

“We have a long history in the government space and are very well-known and respected throughout the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration. One of our biggest challenges is name recognition in the commercial space. There is a perception in the commercial space that if you opt for a vendor other than one of the familiar names, you might not get the same functionality. Hence, brand recognition is a big opportunity for us on the commercial side to demonstrate that we provide an alternative that can quickly support an organization’s needs. Our comprehensive solutions and SYaaS model give healthcare organizations a viable solution that optimizes clinical and financial performance with lower up-front costs, predictable ongoing costs and lower total cost of ownership.”

Evolution Of CliniComp’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Graham noted:

“So much has happened in the 40 years that we’ve been in business. We started in perinatal and critical care settings, then we evolved to offer a full inpatient solution. Due to the unbelievable speed of change in our industry, we are innovating daily based on feedback from our customers about what they want and need. The underlying architecture has remained the same, making us scalable to meet the growing demands of the industry.”

Customer Success Stories

After asking Graham about company success stories, he highlighted:

“One of the things that we consistently hear from the field is that our support from implementation to training to go-live is better than any in the industry. This feedback comes from people who have been working with EHR companies of all shapes and sizes, for many years.”

“Organizations gain substantial benefits from our technology, which enables a shift from being a retrospective organization to looking proactively at how patient care is delivered. Efficient workflows and a focus on compliance raises awareness of care protocols designed to help nurses deliver exemplary care to their patients. Putting these tools in everyone’s hands enables them to improve compliance, resulting in better outcomes for patients.”

“Moreover, advanced integrations and data access save time. For example, nurses working with monitored patients report saving as much as 15 to 20 minutes per patient per shift. It’s just one example of how enabling clinicians with measurable efficiency gains can have a material, positive impact that reduces burnout.”

“On top of that, our system availability and reliability have been instrumental in supporting military medicine and our mission of caring for wounded warriors worldwide. With zero downtime, one of our customers for 25 years acknowledged, we exceed other commercial EHR vendors in ensuring uninterrupted access to critical patient data. This level of reliability is a testament to our commitment to delivering excellence and driving positive outcomes for our customers.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Graham affirmed:

“Our System-as-a-Service model is a key differentiator. There is an overarching perception that implementing and optimizing an EHR is daunting – a heavy lift from start to finish. CliniComp solves that problem by uniquely bundling everything from purchase, implementation, and maximization of the system, including hardware, software, and services, for the life of the contract. This enables us to be fully transparent at the outset and throughout the life of the customer relationship. Additionally, our reliable technology and services remove the burden on our customers’ IT staff. We make it a reasonable, manageable process to lighten the load on our partners.”

Future Company Goals

What are the company’s future goals? Graham concluded:

“There is huge opportunity to support entities of all sizes with data sharing, analysis, prediction, and streamlining workflows to serve their patients more efficiently and effectively.”

“The most important aspect of the interoperability paradigm is the patient at the bedside and the time that the clinician has face-to-face with that patient. We need to make that clinician’s experience streamlined, effective, and transparent. We deliver a longitudinal patient record with real-time data so that patient care is the best that it can be, and that patients’ experiences with their clinicians provide as much one-on-one time as necessary.”

“Our goal is to make a positive impact on the healthcare space. We know there are gaps that organizations face – lack of access to integrated data, interoperability blocks, and the heavy-lifting, very expensive, overburdensome processes associated with EHR implementations. We want to eliminate these barriers and know we have the solution and methodology to accomplish this goal.”

“Ultimately, we are in this business to advance patient care. We know that our methodology is unique and extremely advantageous for hospital systems of all sizes. It is the fiscal health of those organizations and ultimately the bedside patient care that we are striving to uphold.”
